Volume of transport in domestic coastal waterborne traffic decreased by 6 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2025

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, the total volume of goods transported in domestic coastal waterborne traffic was 0.8 million tonnes in October to December 2025. Transports decreased by 6 per cent compared to the fourth quarter of 2024. Domestic water transport took place almost only in coastal waterways.

  • In the fourth quarter of 2025, oil products and timber were transported most in domestic waterborne traffic.
  • In terms of timber transport, preliminary data are supplemented later, which will have an effect especially on the transport volumes of inland waters.
  • No transport was registered through the Saimaa Canal in the fourth quarter.

Oil products were transported most in the fourth quarter of 2025

In domestic waterborne traffic, oil products were transported most, in total 506,663 tonnes, which was 51 per cent of all transport. Timber was transported next most, 246,449 tonnes, making up 25 per cent of all transport.
