Number of household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings increased in 2025

According to Statistics Finland, altogether 1.04 million household-dwelling units lived in rented dwellings at the end of 2025, which is 11,000 more than one year earlier. The number of household-dwelling units with at least two persons grew most during a year. Sixty-five per cent of household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings were living alone.

  • The number of household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings has grown by around 200,000 in ten years. The growth was biggest in absolute numbers for household-dwelling units where the oldest person was aged over 30. In all, 1.6 million persons lived in rented dwellings at the end of 2025.
  • The majority of household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings were living in large towns. Over one-half of all household-dwelling units living in rented dwellings were living in the ten largest towns at the end of 2025.
  • The number of household-dwelling units living in right-of-occupancy dwellings grew by around one thousand during the year.
  • Owner-occupied housing is the most common mode of housing for household-dwelling units. Altogether 3.7 million persons lived in owner-occupied dwellings at the end of 2025.
  • The number of household-dwelling units living in owner-occupied dwellings went down by around 7,000. Part of the change was caused by the review of the statistical system.
