Description
These statistics are derived from data in Statistics Finland’s Business Register. They cover those enterprises engaged in business activity that are liable to pay value-added tax or act as employers. Excluded are foundations, housing companies, voluntary associations, public authorities and religious communities. The statistics cover enterprises of the state but not those of municipalities.
Data content
The statistics contain data on the number of enterprise openings and closures by industry, area and legal form. The time period of the statistics is quarter.
Classifications used
The region of the enterprise is defined following the newest division of regions. (Municipalities and Regional Divisions Based on Municipalities, Statistics Finland, Handbooks 28, Helsinki 2004). The area is determined on the basis of the municipality of domicile of the enterprise. The industry of the enterprise is defined on the basis of the classification confirmed by Statistics Finland in 2002 (Standard Industrial Classification 2002, Statistics Finland, Handbooks 4, Helsinki 2002).
Data collection methods and data sources
Basic data for the statistics derive from the Tax Administration. Data on closures are obtained from Statistics Finland's own inquiry or from the Tax Administration. The earlier one of these is selected to the statistics.

Updating frequency
Quarterly, annually.
Time of completion or release
The quarterly data five months and yearly data about ten months from the end of the statistical period.

Starting from the year 1999.
