Description

The regional statistics on entrepreneurial activity contain data on the establishments of enterprises operating in Finland by industry and region. The statistics covers the establishments of all active enterprises. The preliminary statistics that is published in autumn has less extensive content and it focuses on manufacturing industries, that include B Mining and quarrying, C Manufacturing, D Electricity, gas and water supply, E Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities.

Data content

The basic variables are number of establishments, turnover, number of personnel, hours worked, personnel expenses, gross and added value of production, and investments. The statistical unit is the establishment of an enterprise or another unit engaged in economic transactions.

Classifications used

The Standard Industrial Classification 2008 (Statistics Finland, Handbooks 4, Helsinki 2008) is used as the industrial classification. The Standard Industrial Classification 2008 is based on the EU's standard industrial classification NACE Rev. 2 so that the 4-digit level of NACE was specified for national needs with a fifth digit.

The classification into areas used is based on the publication Municipalities and Regional Divisions Based on Municipalities. (Statistics Finland’s Handbooks 28). Classification into areas is based on the regional division valid in the statistical reference year. Establishments are divided into different areas based on the municipality in which they are located.

Data collection methods and data sources

The statistics utilises various data sources, e.g. direct data collection from enterprises and establishments, and administrative registers like trade taxation records.

Two times a year; release of preliminary data and the actual release

Time of completion or release

Preliminary data are completed in September of the year following the statistical reference year and final data in December.

Data can be obtained from the free PX-Web service database on Statistics Finland's web pages for 2006 to 2012 and preliminary data for 2013.
