Description
The statistics on domestic waterborne traffic describe shipborne transport of goods and passengers, departing from and arriving in Finland. The statistics also describe timber floating. Furthermore, traffic and transport volumes in domestic traffic concerning canal traffic are presented in the statistics.
Data content
The statistics on goods transport include data on total goods volume unloaded and loaded in Finnish ports by commodity group. The statistics on transport of passengers include data on the number of passengers.
The statistics on waterborne traffic present data on the number and tonnage of vessels arriving in and departing from Finnish ports.
Data on goods transport are derived from the basic data obtained from the Portnet system and data on passenger transport from an enterprise inquiry by email.
Classifications used
Shipborne goods transport is divided into coastal and inland waterways traffic. Coastal traffic includes, in addition to domestic traffic between coastal ports, traffic between a coastal and inland waterways port through the Saimaa Canal. Inland waterways shipborne transport includes only transport between inland waterways ports, which does not stop in coastal areas at any point. Export and import volumes of goods are also presented by port and commodity group. The division is derived from the NST 2007 classification for transport statistics. The volume of timber floating and timber floating performance are presented by watercourse.
In passenger ship traffic, the number of passengers, passenger transport performance and number of vessels used in transport are presented by watercourse.
The volume of passenger traffic in the Saimaa Canal is presented for passenger ships and yachts. The volume of waterborne traffic in the Saimaa Canal is presented by type of vessel at the Pälli and Mälkiä locks. Data on other lock canals are presented by waterway and lock canal.
Data collection methods and data sources
Basic data on coastal goods transport are obtained from the shipping companies owning the vessels or the Finnish representatives for the vessels through the national Portnet system. Data on inland waterways goods transport derive from freighters’ notifications of transport to Traficom. Data on timber floating derive from operators engaged in floating.
Data on passenger transport are based on an annual inquiry to enterprises and operators engaged in passenger transport. Enterprises with vessels inspected for passenger transport operating in domestic traffic are included in the enterprise inquiry.
Updating frequency
Monthly and annually.
Time of completion or release
The monthly statistics on domestic waterborne traffic are published around five weeks from the end of the statistical reference month. The annual statistics on domestic waterborne traffic are published at the end of May following the statistical reference year.
Time series
Data on both goods and passenger transport are available starting from 1980.
