Number of enterprise openings turned to a decline and enterprise closures increased from previous year
The number of enterprise openings diminished by 2.2 per cent in 2008. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa. The number of enterprise openings went up in only seven regions. The number of enterprise closure continued to go up in 2008, as it had also done in the three preceding years. The rise from the previous year amounted to 17.1 per cent. Examined by industry the number of enterprise closures was highest in trade and by region in Uusimaa.
Enterprise openings and closures in 2008
According to Statistics Finland, 34,549 new enterprises opened in 2008. Enterprise openings accounted for 10.9 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in 2008. The number of enterprise openings decreased by 2.2 per cent from 2007. The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where it totalled 5,891, or 17.1 per cent of all enterprise openings in 2008.
Enterprise closures numbered 27,204 in 2008. Enterprise closures accounted for 8.3 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in 2008. The number of enterprise closures increased by 17.1 per cent from 2007. The number of closures was highest in trade, where it totalled 5,776, or 21.2 per cent of all enterprise closures.
Examined by region, the highest numbers of both enterprise openings and closures were recorded in 2008 in Uusimaa (11,656 and 9,510, respectively). Compared to 2007, the number of enterprise openings increased most in Kymenlaakso and that of enterprise closures in Uusimaa.
Examined by sub-regional unit, the highest number of enterprise openings relative to the enterprise stock was recorded in 2008 in the sub-regional unit of Oulu (12.7%) and as an absolute number in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (11,323). Relative to the enterprise stock, the highest number of enterprise closures was recorded in the sub-regional unit of Ålands skärgård (11.5%) and as an absolute number in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (9,229).
Examined by municipality, the largest absolute growth of the enterprise stock was recorded in 2008 in Helsinki, where enterprise openings numbered 5,621 and enterprise closures 4,677. Compared to 2007, enterprise openings increased most in Vantaa (55) and decreased most in Helsinki (-259). The number of enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (1,069) and decreased most in Saarijärvi (-24).
These numbers include changes in enterprises resulting from, among other things, incorporations and mergers.
