Number of enterprise openings continued to fall
According to Statistics Finland, the number of enterprise openings
decreased by 3.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2013 from the
respective quarter of the year before. Examined by industry, the
number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, and by region
in Uusimaa. In the first quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise
closures was up by 7.6 per cent on the corresponding quarter of the
year before. Examined by industry, the number of enterprise
closures was highest in trade, and by region in Uusimaa.

According to Statistics Finland, there were 7,416 enterprise openings in the second quarter of 2013. Enterprise openings decreased by 3.1 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2012, when they numbered 7,652. Enterprise openings accounted for 2.2 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the second quarter of 2013.
The number of enterprise openings was highest in trade, where they numbered 1,236, or 16.7 per cent of all enterprise openings in the second quarter. In professional, scientific and technical activities enterprise openings numbered 1,175 (15.8%) and in construction 1,166 (15.7%). In the biggest industries, the number of enterprise openings decreased by most in construction (-139) from the second quarter of 2012.
Examined by region, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the second quarter of 2013 in Uusimaa, where they totalled 2,655. The number of enterprise openings was next highest in Pirkanmaa (680) and Varsinais-Suomi (672). Relative to the enterprise stock, the number of enterprise openings was highest in Uusimaa (2.4%). Compared to the second quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in Pohjois-Savo (25) and decreased most in Lapland (-53).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the second quarter of 2013 the number of enterprise openings was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (2,502), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (544) and Turku (425). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in the sub-regional unit of Kuopio (41) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Turku (-40).
Examined by ELY Centre, in the second quarter of 2013, the number of enterprise openings was highest in the ELY Centre of Uusimaa (2,655), followed by the ELY Centres of Pirkanmaa (680) and Varsinais-Suomi (672). Compared to the second quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in the area of the ELY centre of North Savo (25) and decreased most in the area of the ELY centre of Lapland (-53).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise openings were recorded in the second quarter of 2013 in Helsinki (1,334), followed by Espoo (372), Tampere (338), Vantaa (260) and Turku (258). Compared to the second quarter of 2012, enterprise openings increased most in Helsinki (124) and decreased most in Vantaa (-51) and Turku (-61).
Examined by legal form, in the second quarter of 2013 enterprise openings of the form of natural person numbered 3,751 and those of the form of limited company 2,965. Enterprise openings of the form of natural person accounted for 50.6 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 40.0 per cent of all enterprise openings. Compared to the second quarter of 2012, examined by legal form, enterprise openings increased most in the form of limited company (8) and decreased most in the form of natural person (-139).
Enterprise closures, 1st quarter of 2013
According to Statistics Finland, there were 4,959 enterprise closures in the first quarter of 2013. Compared to the first quarter of the year before, enterprise closures increased by 7.6 per cent, as in the first quarter of 2012 they numbered 4,608. Enterprise closures accounted for 1.5 per cent of the total stock of enterprises in the first quarter of 2013.
Examined by industry, the number of closures was highest in trade, where they numbered 931, or 18.8 per cent of all enterprise closures in the first quarter. In construction, enterprise closures numbered 816 (16.5%) and in professional, scientific and technical activities 676 (13.6%). In the biggest industries, the number of enterprise closures increased most in professional, scientific and technical activities (61) compared to the first quarter of 2012.
Examined by region, the number of enterprise closures was highest in Uusimaa (1,749) in the first quarter of 2013. The numbers of enterprise closures were next highest in Pirkanmaa (452) and Varsinais-Suomi (426). Relative to the enterprise stock, Kymenlaakso had the highest number of enterprise closures (1.7%). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in Uusimaa (95) and decreased most in Pohjois-Savo (-20).
Examined by sub-regional unit, in the first quarter of 2013 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (1,652), followed by the sub-regional units of Tampere (271) and Turku (352). Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in the sub-regional unit of Helsinki (106) and decreased most in the sub-regional unit of Kuopio (-16).
Examined by ELY centre, in the first quarter of 2013 the number of enterprise closures was highest in the ELY centre of Uusimaa (1,749), followed by the ELY centre of Pirkanmaa (452). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in the area of the ELY centre of Uusimaa (95) and decreased most in the area of the ELY centre of North Savo (-20).
Examined by municipality, the highest numbers of enterprise closures were recorded in the first quarter of 2013 in Helsinki (809), Espoo (269), Tampere (213) and Vantaa (201). Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in Helsinki (74) and decreased most in Kuopio (-18).
Examined by legal form, in the first quarter of 2013 enterprise closures of the form of natural person numbered 2,513 and those of the form of limited company 1,730. Enterprise closures of the form of natural person accounted for 50.7 per cent and those of the form of limited company for 35.5 per cent of all enterprise closures. Compared to the first quarter of 2012, enterprise closures increased most in terms of legal form in the form of limited company (159).
