Establishments of enterprises in 2013: one-half of personnel centred around the largest cities

According to Statistics Finland, 354,000 enterprises operated in Finland in 2013. These enterprises had a total of 387,000 establishments. A majority of the enterprises, or 347,000, had only one establishment. The remaining enterprises were multi-establishment enterprises with an average of five establishments per enterprise. The data of these statistics are not comparable with the establishment data of the previous statistics on Finnish enterprises.

The combined number of personnel of the establishments was 1,472,000. Of these, 36 per cent operated in Uusimaa, nine per cent in Pirkanmaa, and eight per cent in Varsinais-Suomi. Close on one-half of the personnel were working elsewhere around the country.

The combined gross value of output of establishments was EUR 280 billion. After excluding production costs, the value added of establishments was EUR 95 billion. Regionally, the areas around the largest cities had the highest value added.

Business statistics are renewed, breaks in time series

Statistics Finland has renewed its production of business statistics. The main changes relate to the Standard Industrial Classification, harmonisation of business data (e.g. turnover and personnel data) and enterprise reorganisations, as well as deduction rules, with which the enterprise of establishment group included in the statistics is formed. The statistical data are not comparable with the previous publications of the statistics on Finnish enterprises, because the definition of the enterprise included in the statistics has been changed.
