General government EMU debt decreased during the third quarter of 2006
General government EMU debt decreased by approximately EUR 4 billion during the third quarter of 2006. The change compared to the debt figures in June is due mainly to the EUR 5 million decrease in central government bond debt to EUR 56.6 billion and the EUR 1 billion increase in short-term money market debt instruments to nearly EUR 3 billion.
The EMU debt of local government, that is municipalities and joint-municipal authorities, remained almost unchanged from the second quarter. Local government debt has been growing slowly from EUR 5 billion in 2000 to nearly EUR 9 billion in the third quarter of 2006. The low level of social security funds' debt according to the EMU criteria has, for its part, dropped to almost zero during the past few years.
