Discontinuation of education increased in university, polytechnic and upper secondary general education but decreased in vocational education
Under 6 per cent of students attending education leading to a qualification or degree discontinued their studies and did not resume them in any education leading to a qualification or degree during the 2004-2005 academic year. The number of discontinuers was highest in vocational education aimed at young people and lowest in upper secondary general education. Compared to the pervious year discontinuation increased in university, polytechnic and upper secondary general education. In vocational education discontinuation has been diminishing steadily for five years. Besides actual changes, improved quality of data and revisions made to the compilation of statistics have also had a bearing on this development.
Upper secondary general education was discontinued by 4 per cent and vocational education aimed at young people by 10.5 per cent of students. In polytechnic education under 9 per cent and in university education good 5 per cent of students discontinued their studies. Some of the discontinuers resumed studies in another sector of education, e.g. an upper secondary general school student in vocational education. Taking into consideration the students having changed sector of education lowers the percentages on discontinuation. This happened particularly in upper secondary general education and polytechnic education.
