Retail trade sales grew by 0.2 per cent in December

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales were 0.2 per cent higher in December 2008 than one year previously. Sales volume fell by 4.0 per cent during the same period. Department store sales grew by 0.7 per cent and daily consumer goods sales by 5.3 per cent. In wholesale trade sales decreased by 3.4 per cent, whereas in motor vehicle trade sales grew by 11.1 per cent from the year before. In total trade sales fell by 0.8 per cent in December.

Compared to 2007, the growth of turnover in total trade (incl. motor vehicle, wholesale and retail trade) amounted to 6.5 per cent in 2008. Retail trade sales were 5.4 per cent higher in 2008 than in the year before. Sales grew by 7.4 per cent in wholesale trade and by 4.7 per cent in motor vehicle trade.
