Retail trade sales grew by 2.5 per cent in January

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales were 2.5 per cent higher in January 2009 than one year previously. Sales volume grew by 0.7 per cent during the same time period. Daily consumer goods sales grew by 7.2 per cent. In wholesale trade sales fell drastically, by 19.6 per cent, reflecting the trend development in manufacturing. The decline in transit exports of cars and domestic demand for cars caused motor vehicle sales to fall by as much as 34.2 per cent from the year before. In total trade sales fell by 16.0 per cent in January.

Compared to 2007, the growth of turnover in total trade (incl. motor vehicle, wholesale and retail trade) amounted to 6.6 per cent in 2008. Retail trade sales were 5.6 per cent higher in 2008 than in the year before. Sales grew by 7.5 per cent in wholesale trade and by 4.9 per cent in motor vehicle trade.
