Retail trade sales fell by 0.9 per cent in April

According to Statistics Finland, retail trade sales fell by 0.9 per cent in April from April 2008. Sales volume fell by 2.4 per cent during the same time period. The volume of daily consumer goods sales also fell by 2.5 per cent. The decrease in sales was due to Easter being in April this year, while last year it was in March. This April contained two fewer trading days than the corresponding month last year. Wholesale trade sales fell by 21.4 per cent and motor vehicle sales by 40.7 per cent. In total trade, sales fell by 19.0 per cent in April.

In retail trade, sales in January-April diminished by 1.6 per cent. During the same time period, motor vehicle trade sales were 31.8 per cent and wholesale trade sales 17.5 per cent down on the year before. In total trade, sales fell by 15.7 per cent in January-April.

Turnover in new car sales has been recorded according to a revised bookkeeping practice since data concerning April. Motor car tax is no longer included in the turnover as in the past. An estimation of the share of the motor car tax in last year's April has been removed from the annual change shown for this April.
