Total output went up in February

According to the seasonally adjusted series of the Monthly Indicator of Total Output calculated by Statistics Finland, the volume of total output went up by 0.5 per cent in February from the month before.

The series of the Monthly Indicator of Total Output are seasonally adjusted with the Tramo/Seats method. The latest observations of the series adjusted for seasonal and random variation (seasonally adjusted and trend series) become revised with new observations in seasonal adjustment methods.

Total output was 2.4 per cent higher than in February 2005

The volume of total output grew by 2.4 per cent in February 2006 from February of the previous year. Among the six main industries of the Monthly Indicator, output only declined in primary production. February 2006 had the same number of working days as the corresponding month of the year before.

According to the original series, industrial output went up by 3.7 per cent from February 2005. Output volumes in the whole metal industry grew by 10 per cent and production in its sub-industry of manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment went up by 13 per cent. In the wood and paper industry output fell by 4 per cent but grew by 7 per cent in energy supply. In other manufacturing, output volumes fell by 2 per cent from their previous year's levels.

Sales volumes of trade increased by 4 per cent. Wholesale trade grew by 5 per cent, and retail trade and motor vehicle sales both by 4 per cent.

Output in primary production declined by 10 per cent form its February 2005 level. Output increased by 2 per cent in other service industries and by 4 per cent in construction from February 2005. Transport remained on level with the previous year.

The Monthly Indicator of Total Output is based on twelve monthly series on different industries of the economy. The series are summed up by weighting. The purpose of the Monthly Indicator is to anticipate the development of the quarterly gross domestic product calculated later with more detailed data.
