Goods transported by lorries in domestic transport increased in April-June 2011

In the second quarter of 2011, the volume of goods transported by lorries in domestic road transport increased by 3 per cent from the corresponding quarter of 2010. A total of 82 million tonnes of goods were transported by lorries during the April to June period of 2011. Twenty-two per cent more of soil materials but 8 per cent less of other materials were transported than in the April to June period of 2010.

These data derive from the statistics on goods transport by road compiled by Statistics Finland. The method of the statistics on goods transport by road was revised as of the beginning of 2011. The data for 2010 have been recalculated using the new method. The data are not comparable with data published earlier.

In the second quarter of 2011, the transport performance of lorries totalled 6,293 million tonne-kilometres, of which 462 million tonne-kilometres were in private transport and 5,831 million tonne-kilometres in professional transport. The transport performance went up by one per cent from the corresponding time period of 2010.

The data for the statistics on goods transport by road are collected from lorry owners with a quarterly sample survey. Transported volume of goods refers to the weight of goods loaded on lorries in tonnes. Tonne-kilometre describes the volume of transport and is obtained as a product of transported volume of goods and length of transport journey.
