In 2006 number of deaths lower than in 2003 for the third year running

In 2006 the number of deaths was roughly 1,000 lower than in 2003. The number of deaths was 1,000 lower than in 2003 also in 2004 and 2005. In light of the population structure the development of the number of deaths has been exceptional.

Out of all deaths, 24,300 were men and 23,750 women. Fewer men died each year during the period 2000 to 2005 than in 2006. More women died each year during the period 1988-2005 than in 2006.

In 2006 the number of deaths of children during their first year of life was also particularly low at 167. In 2006 the infant mortality figure was the lowest during Finland's independence. Infant mortality per 1,000 live births was 2.8.
