Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 11.5 per cent in January

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in January 2008 was 558,000, which is 11.5 per cent more than in January 2007. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists also went up by 4 per cent from last year. The total number of nights spent increased by 7 per cent from January 2007 and rose to 1.3 million overnightings. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and from youth hostels.

In January, as also in the past few years, Russians were again by far the largest group of foreign tourists with 240,000 overnight stays. The nights they spent increased by 17 per cent, which contributed largely to the growth in the total number of nights spent by foreign tourists. Russians accounted for as much as 43 per cent of the total number of nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland. Britons were next with nearly 62,000 nights spent. The number of nights they spent at Finnish accommodation establishments was 31 per cent higher than one year earlier. Over 30,000 overnights stays were recorded in statistics for German and French tourists. Nights spent by German tourists went up by 7 per cent whereas those spent by French tourists fell by 15 per cent from last year. Compared to January 2007, there were also strong increases in the numbers of nights spent by tourists from Spain and Norway. The growth in the nights spent by Spanish tourists amounted to 28 per cent and that in the nights spent by Norwegian tourists to 22 per cent.
