Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 19 per cent in February

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in February 2008 was 409,000, which is 19 per cent more than in February 2007. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists also went up by 12 per cent from last year. The total number of nights spent increased by 14 per cent from February 2007 and rose to 1.5 million overnightings. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Overnight stays at Finnish accommodation establishments increased strongly in February. The number of overnight stays in Finland of visitors from the two most important inbound tourism countries was a good deal higher than in the year before. Nights spent by British visitors were up by as much as 39.5 per cent from the year before, and with their 67,600 overnightings they made up the biggest foreign visitor group. Russian visitors made up the second biggest group with 59,000 overnightings, which amounted to a 31 per cent increase from the year before. The overnight stays of German, Norwegian and Italian visitors also increased, by one-fifth from February 2007. The number of nights spent by French visitors grew the least, even though they did spend 4 per cent more nights in Finland than one year previously.
