Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 6 per cent in March

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in March 2008 was 421,000, which is 6 per cent more than in March 2007. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists remained on level with March 2007. The total number of nights was 1.6 million, which is one per cent more than in March 2007. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

With their 65,000 overnight stays the Russians made up the largest group of foreign tourists in March. The number of overnight stays of Russian tourists grew by 13 per cent when compared with March 2007. Britons had the second highest number, nearly 54,000, of overnight stays. Overnight stays of British tourists increased by 33 per cent from the year before. When compared with March 2007, Spanish tourists' overnight stays increased the most, by 39 per cent. The number of recorded overnight stays of Spanish tourists was 13,600. By contrast, the overnight stays of French tourists decreased by 13 per cent and those of Estonians by 8 per cent from the corresponding period in the year before. The overnight stays of German and Swedish tourists also decreased in March, by 6 per cent from March 2007.
