Nights spent by domestic tourists increased by 6.5 per cent in May
The number of recorded nights spent by domestic tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in May 2008 was 940,000, which is 6.5 per cent more than in May 2007. The number of nights spent by foreign tourists also went up by 4.5 per cent from last year. The total number of nights spent increased by 6 per cent from May 2007 and rose to 1.3 million overnighting days. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.
Russians were the largest group of foreign tourists in May 2008. They spent 51,000 nights at Finnish accommodation establishments. The number was as much as 50.5 per cent up on the year before. Swedish visitors came next with 48,000 recorded overnight stays, even though the number fell by 6 per cent from the year before. German tourists came third with 40,000 overnight stays, which was 7.5 per cent more than in May 2007. Nights spent by Italian visitors increased by 18 per cent and overnight stays by visitors from France and the United States both went up by seven per cent from the year before. By contrast, Estonian tourists spent 12.5 per cent fewer nights than last year. The total number of recorded overnight stays by foreign tourists was 364,000 in May 2008.
