Number of nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments fell by 2 per cent in August

In August 2008, nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments totalled 2.1 million, which was 2 per cent fewer than one year earlier. The number of nights spent by resident tourists at accommodation establishments fell by 2.5 per cent from the previous year and totalled 1.4 million. The number of recorded nights spent by non-resident tourists totalled 684,000, which was one per cent fewer than in August 2007. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

The number of nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments turned to a decline in June and continued to fall in July and August. Growth from August 2007 was only recorded in overnightings by Russian and Japanese tourists. Nights spent by British, Estonian and French tourists remained almost unchanged. Nights spent by Russian tourists increased by as much as one-quarter and with their 108,000 overnightings they were, in fact, the largest group of foreign visitors. German tourists were second with nearly 87,000 nights spent. This was 4 per cent down on the year before. Swedish tourists came third with 83,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments, which was 6 per cent fewer than in August 2007. Nights spent in Finland by visitors from the other most important inbound tourism countries also decreased from the year before.
