Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland up by 4 per cent in September

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in September 2008 was 383,000, which was 4 per cent up on September 2007. The number of nights spent by resident tourists remained on level with the previous year. The total number of overnightings was 1.5 million. This was one per cent more than in the year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

The nights spent by non-resident tourists in Finnish accommodation establishments diminished slightly in summer 2008. In September, the overnightings turned towards growth again and 4 per cent more of them were recorded than twelve months earlier. Russians were the largest group of foreign visitors in September. Their overnightings increased by 13 per cent from the year before and accommodation establishments recorded a total of 48,000 of them. The next largest group were Swedish visitors with nearly 46,000 nights spent. The number was 2 per cent higher than one year previously. Germans came third with 43,000 nights spent, which was 12 per cent up on September 2007. However, the biggest increase of 15 per cent was recorded in the nights spent by Italian visitors whose nights spent totalled good 10,000. By contrast, the nights spent by visitors from France and Spain fell 10 to 12 per cent short of the previous year's figures. Smaller changes took place in the nights spent by visitors from the other most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland.
