Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by one per cent in November 2008
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in November 2008 was a good 306,000, which was one per cent down on November 2007. The number of nights spent by resident tourists remained unchanged from the year before. The total number of overnightings was 1.2 million, which was almost the same number as in the year before. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.
The overnightings in Finland of visitors from all the most important inbound tourism countries, Russia and Spain excluded, decreased in November 2008. The biggest decrease in nights spent, at 17 per cent, was recorded for British visitors. The overnightings of Swedish and Japanese visitors also showed a strong decrease. The statistics compiled show that their overnightings were 13-14 per cent down on November 2007. Overnightings by visitors from the United States decreased by 11 per cent, whereas the number of nights spent by Spanish visitors show a corresponding increase from the year before. Nights spent by Russian tourists increased by 22 per cent and as expected they were the largest group of foreign visitors. A total of 72,000 overnightings in Finnish accommodation establishments were recorded for Russian tourists. The next largest group were Swedish tourists with 29,000 overnightings. Germans came third with 27,000 overnightings, which was 5 per cent down on November 2007. The number of nights spent by French tourists stayed on level with the year before.
