Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 17 per cent in April

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in April 2009 was 260,000, which was 17 per cent less than in April 2008. By contrast, the number of nights spent by domestic tourists increased by one per cent from the year before. The total number of overnight stays decreased by 3 per cent from April 2008. Accommodation establishments recorded 1.3 million of them. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Overnight stays continued to decrease in April. The numbers of overnight stays in Finland of visitors from nearly all of the most important inbound tourism countries were significantly lower than in the year before. Visitors from Russia and the UK were the largest groups of foreign tourists in April. A total of 40,000 overnight stays at accommodation establishments were recorded for Russian visitors, which was 8 per cent less than one year before. British visitors' overnight stays decreased by 11 per cent, and their number was recorded at 31,000. Swedish and German visitors made up the next biggest groups. Their overnight stays decreased by between 16 and 19 per cent from last year. The biggest fall, however, was recorded in the overnight stays of visitors from the USA and Japan, at 26 per cent for both groups. The number of nights spent by Norwegian and Dutch visitors was down by nearly one fifth from April 2008. In April only Spanish visitors' overnightings increased, by 8 per cent.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotel statistics.
