Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 9 per cent in August

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in August 2009 was 620,000, which was 9 per cent lower than in August 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists at accommodation establishments fell by one per cent from the previous year and totalled 1.4 million. The total number of overnight stays decreased by just under 4 per cent from one year back. Accommodation establishments recorded a total of 2 million of them in August 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Nights spent at Finnish accommodation establishments have been decreasing throughout the current year and August made no exception. The numbers of overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for visitors from all the most important inbound tourism countries were considerably lower than twelve months earlier. Russians were the largest group of foreign tourists in August with their 98,000 overnight stays. However, this was 10 per cent less than one year earlier. German visitors came next. Accommodation establishments recorded for them 81,000 overnight stays, which was 5 per cent less than one year earlier. Visitors from Sweden came third with nearly 74,000 nights spent, which was 11 per cent down year-on-year. However, the largest reductions in overnight stays were recorded for visitors from Estonia, Norway and Spain, for all of whom the recorded number of nights spent fell by nearly one-fifth from August 2008. The number of nights spent by visitors from Japan also contracted strongly. Their overnight stays at accommodation establishments decreased by 16 per cent from the year before. The only increase of 2 per cent was recorded in overnights stays by French visitors.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotel statistics. Further information about the TOL 2008 classification is available in the TOL 2008 section on Statistics Finland's website.
