Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 11 per cent in September
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in September 2009 was 340,000, which was 11 per cent lower than in September 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists at accommodation establishments fell by 4 per cent from the previous year and totalled 1.1 million. The total number of overnight stays decreased by just under 6 per cent from one year back. Accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1. 4 million of them in September 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.
The number of nights spent by resident and foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments kept decreasing in September. The numbers of overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for visitors from the most important inbound tourism countries were considerably lower than twelve months earlier. Over 40,000 overnight stays were recorded for Russian and Swedish visitors; in fact, they were the largest foreign tourist groups in September 2009. However, the figure was 10 to 11 per cent lower than one year earlier. Germans came third with 36,000 nights spent, which was 16 per cent fewer than twelve months earlier. The number of overnight stays by Spanish tourists decreased by one-fifth and those by Norwegians by almost 18 per cent from one year back. The number of overnight stays by Japanese tourists also showed a considerable decrease of 15 per cent compared with the figures for September 2008.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotel statistics.
