Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 9 per cent in November 2009

The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in November 2009 was 280,000, which was nine per cent lower than in November 2008. The number of nights spent by resident tourists fell by six per cent from the previous year and they overnighted 850,000 times at accommodation establishments. The total number of overnight stays decreased by seven per cent from November of the year before and accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.1 million of them in November 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

The number of nights spent by foreign tourists at accommodation establishments in Finland continued to fall in November 2009. The numbers of overnight stays recorded at accommodation establishments for visitors from all the most important inbound tourism countries were notably lower in November than twelve months earlier. Russians were the largest group of foreign tourists with almost 62,000 overnight stays, although even this was a drop of 15 per cent from the year before. Tourists from Germany and Sweden were the next largest groups, and 27,000 overnight stays were recorded for both of them. Overnight stays of German tourists decreased by one per cent and those of Swedish tourists by nine per cent. The number of nights spent by Japanese tourists also showed a considerable fall of 16 per cent from November 2008. Nights spent by tourists from the USA and Spain decreased by 9-10 per cent from the previous year.

The standard industrial classification TOL 2008 was introduced in these Tourism Statistics starting from data concerning January 2009. The introduction has caused minor changes to data on the number of establishments in hotels statistics.
