Nights spent by foreign tourists in Finland decreased by 4 per cent in May
The number of recorded nights spent by foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in May 2010 was 320,000, which was four per cent lower than in May 2009. By contrast, the number of nights spent by domestic tourists at accommodation establishments was almost unchanged from one year earlier. The total number of overnight stays decreased by one per cent from last year and was 1.2 million in May 2010. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Among the most important countries of inbound tourism into Finland, overnight stays of visitors from Estonia increased most, or by 10 per cent, and 12,000 overnight stays were recorded for them in May 2010. Night spent by Russian and Norwegian tourists each went up by four per cent and as usual Russians were the largest group of foreign tourists in May with good 56,000 overnight stays while 10,000 nights were recorded for Norwegian tourists. Swedish visitors were the second largest group of foreign tourists with 44,000 overnight stays. The number was two per cent higher than last year. German visitors were the third largest group with 30,000 recorded overnight stays, even though the number was 10 per cent lower than one year earlier. Overnight stays of Spanish and Italian tourists decreased most. Nights spent by Spanish tourists fell by good one-quarter and those of Italian tourists by one-fifth from May last year.
