Overnight stays at accommodation establishments increased by six per cent in September

The total number of overnight stays at Finnish accommodation establishments rose to 1.5 million in September 2010, which was six per cent up on one year previously. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists was good 1.1 million and by foreign tourists nearly 361,000. Both increased by six per cent from one year back. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

The number of nights spent by resident and foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments has been growing since July and increased further in September. Overnight visits by tourists from almost all the most important countries of inbound tourism into Finland increased in September 2010. Nearly 54,000 overnight stays were recorded for Russian visitors; in fact, they were the largest foreign tourist group in September. The number was as much as 23 per cent higher than in September 2009. Swedes came next with 44,000 nights spent, with an increase of four per cent from the previous year. Visitors from Germany came third with nearly 35,000 nights spent, although the number of overnight stays by them was five per cent down on the year before. The number of overnight stays by British and Italian tourists decreased by three to seven per cent. By contrast, the numbers of overnight stays by visitors from Estonia and Spain increased strongly. Nights spent by Estonian visitors increased by 41 per cent and overnight stays by visitors from Spain went up by 32 per cent from the year before.
