Overnight stays at accommodation establishments increased by nearly 6 per cent in October

The total number of overnight stays at Finnish accommodation establishments was 1.4 million in October 2010, which was close on six per cent up on one year previously. The number of nights spent by domestic tourists was just under 1.1 million, up by six per cent from one year back. Nearly 300,000 overnight stays were recorded for foreign tourists. The number was four per cent higher than in October 2009. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Overnight stays by resident and foreign tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments started to grow in July and the same trend continued in October as well. In all, 55,000 overnight stays were recorded for Russian visitors and as usual, they were the largest foreign tourist group in October. The number of their overnight stays was 15 per cent higher than one year previously. Swedes came next with 29,000 nights spent, down by 2.5 per cent from the previous year. German visitors made up the third largest group with good 25,000 overnight stays. The number of nights spent by Germans fell drastically and 14 per cent fewer stays at accommodation establishments were recorded for them than one year previously. By contrast, the numbers of overnight stays by visitors from Estonia and the United States grew strongly. Nights spent by Estonian visitors increased by 35 per cent and overnight stays by visitors from the U.S. went up by 23 per cent from October 2009.
