Nights spent by domestic tourists increased by 9 per cent in December
The number of recorded nights spent by domestic tourists at Finnish accommodation establishments in December 2010 was nearly 810,000, which was nine per cent more than in December 2009. The number of overnight stays by foreign tourists increased by two per cent compared with December 2009 and they spent around 450,000 nights at accommodation establishments. The total number of nights spent increased by six per cent from December 2009 and rose to nearly 1.3 million. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland's statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 10 rooms, cottages, or caravan pitches with electricity connection, and youth hostels.

Russians were by far the biggest group of foreigners in December 2010, with 115,000 nights spent. Overnight stays of Russian tourists increased by 15 per cent from the year before. Britons came next with nearly 100,000 nights spent. Overnight stays by British visitors fell by nine per cent. French tourists came third with good 26,000 overnight stays, which was seven per cent more than in December 2009. Nights spent by German tourists went down by six per cent whereas those spent by Swedish tourists went up by six per cent from the previous year. Travelling from Spain increased by 19 per cent, and by five to 13 per cent from Norway, the Netherlands and Italy. By contrast, tourism from Japan and Estonia decreased. Estonian tourists spent nine per cent and Japanese tourists 12 per cent fewer nights in Finland than one year before.
