Overnight stays by resident tourists recovered in June 2021

Overnight stays by resident tourists recovered nearly to the level preceding the corona crisis. Overnight stays by resident tourists were only 3 per cent less than in June 2019. Overnight stays by resident tourists increased outside Greater Helsinki by 3 per cent but in Greater Helsinki they decreased by 32 per cent compared to June 2019. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists decreased by 87 per cent compared to June 2019. Finnish accommodation establishments recorded a total of 1.63 million overnight stays, which was a quarter less than two years ago. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

In Uusimaa, overnight stays doubled from last year

The recovery of tourism is illustrated by comparison with the year before the corona crisis started in 2020. For leisure trips, overnight stays by resident tourists increased by 5 per cent from June 2019. Overnight stays by resident business travellers decreased by 24 per cent . Overnight stays by non-resident leisure travellers were 92 per cent less than two years ago and 78 per cent less by non-resident business travellers. Examined by region, overnight stays decreased compared to June 2019 most in relative terms in Uusimaa, by 58 per cent. However, overnight stays in Uusimaa doubled from last year. Compared to June last year, overnight stays increased in all regions.

Highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms in North Karelia

Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in North Karelia, 62.5 per cent, and in Southwest Finland, 58.0 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 25.9 per cent, 53.9 per cent in Tampere, 59.5 per cent in Turku, 51.8 per cent in Oulu and 33.9 per cent in Rovaniemi.

In June 2021, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 96.97 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 92.21. There was a total of 53,483 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 14,120 more than in June 2020.

Overnight stays decreased by 5.6 per cent in January to June 2021

In January to June 2021, a total of 5.79 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 5.6 per cent less than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 5.43 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 0.36 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 21.9 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 78.7 from the previous year.

Overnight stays declined from all of the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland. The smallest drop was seen in overnight stays by Estonians. Overnight stays by them declined by 17 800 nights. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 233,500 nights. Their overnight stays were 96.0 per cent down on January to June 2020.

The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Estonians with 51,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Germans with 49,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was Swedes with 29,000 overnight stays , and fourth were U.S. tourists with 22,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Dutch tourists (13,000 nights), sixth was Britons (11,000 nights), seventh Italians (11,000 nights) and eight was French (11,000 nights).
