Overnight stays continued to recover in September 2021
Overnight stays by resident tourists exceeded the level of September 2019 preceding the corona crisis by 6 per cent. Overnight stays by non-resident tourists decreased by 60 per cent compared to September 2019. The total amount of overnight stays was 1.60 million, which was 12 per cent less than two years ago. These figures are preliminary data from Statistics Finland’s statistics on accommodation establishments and they have been collected from accommodation establishments with at least 20 beds or caravan pitches with electricity connection.

Overnight stays by business travellers still below the level of 2019
The recovery of tourism is illustrated by comparison with the year before the corona crisis started in 2020. For leisure trips, overnight stays by resident tourists increased by 19 per cent from September 2019. In turn, overnight stays by resident business travellers decreased by 13 per cent. Overnight stays by non-resident leisure travellers were 58 per cent less than two years ago and 63 per cent less by non-resident business travellers.

Examined by region, overnight stays decreased most compared to September 2019 in Uusimaa, by 43 per cent. Compared to September last year however, overnight stays increased in all regions.

Occupancy rates of hotel rooms high in several regions
Among the regions, the highest occupancy rates of hotel rooms were measured in North Ostrobothnia, 59.3 per cent, and in Kainuu, 56.0 per cent. In Helsinki, the hotel room occupancy rate was 34.1 per cent, 58.8 per cent in Tampere, 53.5 per cent in Turku, 65.2 per cent in Oulu and 38.8 per cent in Rovaniemi.
In September 2021, the realised average price of a hotel room was EUR 99.96 per day for the whole country. Twelve months earlier, it was EUR 93.18. There was a total of 55,727 hotel rooms available in Finland, which was 3,615 more than in September 2020.

Overnight stays increased by 10.4 per cent in January to September 2021
In January to September 2021, a total of 12.83 million nights were spent in Finnish accommodation establishments. This was 10.4 per cent more than in the corresponding period one year earlier. In all, 11.81 million overnight stays were recorded for resident tourists and 1.02 million for non-resident tourists. The number of nights spent by resident tourists increased by 23.6 per cent and nights spent by non-resident tourists declined by 50.5 from the previous year.
Among the most important countries of inbound tourism to Finland, overnight stays by Swedes increased most in absolute numbers, by 29,900 nights. This was 35.1 per cent higher than in the year before. The biggest drop was seen in overnight stays by Russians, down by 228,100 nights. Their overnight stays were 91.4 per cent down on January to September 2020.
The biggest group of non-resident tourists were Germans with 164,000 overnight stays. The second largest group was Swedes with 115,000 overnight stays. The third largest group was Estonians with 105,000 overnight stays , and fourth were U.S. tourists with 53,000 overnight stays. The fifth largest group was Dutch tourists (39,000 nights), sixth was French (34,000 nights), seventh Italians (32,000 nights) and eight was Britons (32,000 nights).
