Record immigration and migration gain in 2007
According to Statistics Finland, 26,050 persons immigrated to Finland from foreign countries during 2007. The number is 3,600 persons more than in the previous year and the highest during Finnish independence. Emigration from Finland increased slightly and was 12,450 persons. During 2007 net immigration numbered 13,600 persons, which is the highest number in the post-war period.
During the past seven years immigration into Finland from other EU countries has been higher than emigration from Finland to other EU countries. In 2007 Finland had a migration gain of 4,400 persons from EU countries. Immigration into Finland from other EU countries has been growing since 1997. Emigration from Finland into other EU countries has remained stable during the past few years.
Migration between Finland and other EU countries 1992-2007
In 2007 the number of intermunicipal migrations was 293,200, which is 6,700 more than in 2006. The number of migrations inside regions increased by 3,850 and that of migration between regions by 2,850. When looking at migration inside the country, the migration gain of the region of Pirkanmaa (2,350 persons) was the biggest and that of the region of Uusimaa the second biggest (2,300 persons). Relative to population, migration gain was the biggest in Kanta-Häme. The most population in migration inside the country was lost by the regions of Etelä-Savo (1,250) and Lapland (950). The migration losses of Kainuu and Etelä-Savo were relatively the biggest. Intramunicipal migrations in 2007 numbered 575,050, which is 4,000 fewer than in 2006.
