Students increasingly often employed during studies
Employment during studies increased most among students in vocational education. In 2005, 56 per cent of the students had an employment relationship during studies. However, a part the studies in vocational education are completed in an employment relationship. Employment of students in polytechnic education also increased from the year before, 54 per cent of the students were employed during studies. The employment of students in university education and upper secondary general education has remained level in the 2000s. Roughly 57 per cent of university students and roughly 30 per cent of students in upper secondary general education students have been employed.
Employment during studies becomes the more common the older the students are. 22 per cent of the 18-year-olds but 52 per cent of the 24-year-olds were employed during studies. Employment of students during studies varies by field of education. 71 per cent of students in the field of safety and security and 66 per cent of students in the fields of social sciences, business and administration were employed. 58 per cent of students in the fields of welfare, health and sport and 55 per cent of students in the fields of humanities and education were employed during studies. Employment during studies was notably more common in the region of Uusimaa than elsewhere in Finland.
Since 2005 the register-based statistics on the employment of students comprise only students 18 years of age or older, as data on the employment of students is based on employment pension data and 15-17-year-olds are no longer covered by the employment pension insurance.
