Turnover of construction enterprises slowed down to nearly 3 per cent in the November to January period

In the November to January period, the turnover of construction enterprises fell by 2.7 per cent from the corresponding three-month period of the year before. In January 2009, construction enterprises' turnover contracted by 12.5 per cent from the previous January. Examined by the revised standard industrial classification TOL 2008, the turnover of enterprises engaged in the construction of buildings contracted by as much as 20.2 per cent and that of enterprises engaged in specialised construction activities by 9 per cent in January. The turnover of civil engineering enterprises continued to grow in January, and showed an increase of 9.2 per cent from the respective time period of the year before. These data derive from the preliminary index of turnover of construction compiled by Statistics Finland.

The sales volume of construction enterprises contracted by 6.1 per cent year-on-year in the November to January period. Over the same period, the sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by 13.9 per cent and that of specialised construction enterprises by 2.6 per cent. The sales volume of civil engineering enterprises grew by 6.6 per cent year-on-year in the November to January period.

In January 2009, the sales volume of construction enterprises was 15.4 per cent lower than in January 2008. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by as much as 23.1 per cent, and that of specialised construction enterprises by 12.3 per cent year-on-year in January. The sales volume of civil engineering enterprises went up by 7.4 per cent from January 2008.

The volume index of enterprises' sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the turnover index series. From January 2008 to January 2009, costs went up by 1.5 per cent in building construction and by 1.6 per cent in civil engineering.
