Turnover of construction enterprises contracted by nearly 7 per cent in the December to February period
In the December to February period, the turnover of construction enterprises fell by 6.9 per cent from the corresponding three-month period of the year before. In February 2009, construction enterprises' turnover contracted by 16.8 per cent from the previous year. Examined by the revised standard industrial classification TOL 2008, the turnover of enterprises engaged in the construction of buildings contracted by as much as 25.4 per cent, that of enterprises engaged in civil engineering by 6.3 per cent, and that of enterprises engaged in specialised construction activities by 9.9 per cent in February when compared with the corresponding period of the year before. These data derive from the preliminary index of turnover of construction compiled by Statistics Finland.
The sales volume of construction enterprises contracted by 9.1 per cent year-on-year in the December to February period. Over the same period, the sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by 19.7 per cent and that of specialised construction enterprises by 4.3 per cent. The sales volume of civil engineering enterprises grew by 5.6 per cent year-on-year in the December to February period.
In February 2009, the sales volume of construction enterprises was 18.2 per cent lower than in February 2008. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by as much as 27.8 per cent, that of civil engineering enterprises by 6.7 per cent, and that of specialised construction enterprises by 12.9 per cent year-on-year in February.
The volume index of enterprises' sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the turnover index series. From February 2008 to February 2009, costs went up by 0.7 per cent in building construction and by 0.4 per cent in civil engineering.
