Turnover of construction enterprises contracted by good 19 per cent in the April to June period

The turnover of construction enterprises fell by 19.2 per cent in the second quarter of 2009 when compared with the corresponding quarter twelve months back. In June 2009, construction enterprises' turnover contracted by 14.8 per cent from the previous year. The contraction was largest in the construction of buildings where turnover fell by 20.3 per cent in June. In specialised construction activities the decrease from the corresponding time period of the year before amounted to 12.3 per cent and in civil engineering to 6 per cent. These data derive from the preliminary index of turnover of construction compiled by Statistics Finland.

The sales volume of construction enterprises shrunk by 19.3 per cent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2009 when compared with the respective quarter of 2008. Over the April to June period, the sales volume of building construction enterprises decreased by 24.9 per cent, that of specialised construction enterprises by 17.3 per cent and that of civil engineering enterprises by 8.9 per cent from the corresponding time period of twelve months back.

In June 2009, the sales volume of construction enterprises diminished by 14.1 per cent from June 2008. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell in June by 20.1 per cent, that of civil engineering enterprises by 3.4 per cent, and that of specialised construction enterprises by 12.2 per cent from June 2008.

The volume index of enterprises' sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the turnover index series. In June 2009, the costs of building construction fell by 1.7 per cent and those of civil engineering by 2.7 per cent from the corresponding month of 2008.
