Turnover of construction enterprises contracted by good 12 per cent in the last quarter

According to Statistics Finland, the turnover of construction enterprises fell by 12.4 per cent in the October to December period of 2009 from the corresponding period twelve months back. In 2009 the turnover of construction companies diminished by 14.9 per cent from 2008. In the last quarter of the year, turnover decreased by 10.1 per cent in the construction of buildings, by 16.4 per cent in civil engineering and by 13.4 per cent in specialised construction activities.

In December 2009, construction enterprises' turnover contracted by 10.7 per cent from the previous year. The contraction was strongest in specialised construction activities where turnover fell by 15.6 per cent in December. In civil engineering the decrease from the corresponding time period of the previous year amounted to 14.5 per cent and in the construction of buildings to 3.7 per cent. These data derive from the preliminary index of turnover of construction compiled by Statistics Finland.

The sales volume of construction enterprises shrunk by 7.2 per cent year-on-year in the last quarter of 2009. The sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by 4.1 per cent, that of specialised construction activities by 7.6 per cent and that of civil engineering by 15.2 per cent.

In December 2009, the sales volume of construction enterprises fell by 5.3 per cent from December 2008. In December, the sales volume of building construction enterprises fell by 3.5 per cent, that of specialised construction activities by 9.2 per cent and that of civil engineering enterprises by 16.2 per cent. The volume index of enterprises' sales is calculated by removing the effect of price changes from the turnover index series.

In December 2009, the costs of building construction fell by one per cent while those of civil engineering rose by two per cent from December 2008.
