Annual change in turnover in selected manufacturing industries during 10/2011–12/2011 and 10/2010–12/2010, % (TOL 2008)

Annual change in turnover in selected manufacturing industries during 10/2011–12/2011 and 10/2010–12/2010, % (TOL 2008)
The sub-industries of manufacturing were evenly divided into both contracted and grown ones. The growth was strongest in the chemical industry (13.4%) and in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (8.6%). Turnover contracted most in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (-16.9%) and in the forest industry (-8.1%). Turnover also went down in the textile, clothing and leather industry (-3.9%), in mining and quarrying (-2.8%) and in the electronic and electrical industry (-1.8%).

When examining the whole of 2011, the growth in the turnover of manufacturing enterprises slowed down towards the end of the year. The growth was strongest in the first quarter when turnover went up by 15.7 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter of the year before. Over the whole year 2011, turnover grew by 0.4 per cent, export turnover by 0.6 per cent and domestic sales by 0.2 per cent from the year before.

The index of turnover in industry describes enterprises whose main industry is manufacturing. The calculation of the indices is based on the Tax Administration’s value added tax data which are supplemented with data obtained with Statistics Finland’s sales inquiry. The monthly turnovers of manufacturing enterprises can vary considerably, especially in the metal industries. The variation is mainly due to invoicing practices. The final invoice for major machinery deliveries and projects may be recorded in the sales of one month, even if the delivery had required the work of several months or years.
