Turnover in manufacturing contracted by just under 3 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2013

According to Statistics Finland, in the July to September period of 2013 turnover in manufacturing was 2.7 per cent down on the corresponding period of the year before. Domestic sales contracted by 3.0 per cent and export turnover by 2.4 per cent from one year ago.

The sub-industries of manufacturing (C) were evenly divided into both contracted and grown ones. Turnover grew in the food industry (2.3%), the chemical industry (1.3%) and the textile, clothing and leather industry (1.1%) compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. In other industries turnover contracted year-on-year. The declines were fastest in the electronic and electrical industry (-10.6%) and in the metal industry (-5.5%).

In the main categories of other industries , mining and quarrying decreased by 3.6 per cent in the July to September period compared with one year earlier. Turnover of electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply grew by 7.0 per cent and water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities by 2.2 per cent from one year ago.

The index of turnover in industry describes enterprises whose main industry is manufacturing. The calculation of the indices is based on the Tax Administration’s value added tax data which are supplemented with data obtained with Statistics Finland’s sales inquiry. The monthly turnovers of manufacturing enterprises can vary considerably, especially in the metal industries. The variation is mainly due to invoicing practices. The final invoice for major machinery deliveries and projects may be recorded in the sales of one month, even if the delivery had required the work of several months or years.
