Road traffic accidents claimed 20 lives in May

According to preliminary data of Statistics Finland, 461 accidents involving personal injury happened in road traffic in May. In them, 20 persons were killed and 574 persons injured. The number of persons killed was five higher and that of persons injured 12 higher than in May 2014.

Of the persons who were killed, 11 travelled by passenger car, two by van and four by motorcycle. Cyclists killed in road traffic accidents numbered two. In addition, one other road user was killed. Among those who died, 17 were men and three were women.

A total of 1,682 road traffic accidents involving personal injury happened in the January to May period. In them, 96 persons were killed and 2,121 persons injured. The number of persons killed was 25 higher and that of persons injured 155 lower than in the corresponding period of 2014. Of the persons who were killed, 62 travelled by passenger car, five by van, two by lorry and four by motorcycle. Pedestrians killed numbered 13 and cyclists six. In addition, four other road users were killed.
