Industrial output went up by 8.5 per cent year-on-year in August

According to Statistics Finland, seasonally adjusted industrial output was 8.5 per cent higher in August 2006 than in August 2005. Industrial output has grown strongly in the early part of the year. The warm and dry summer also boosted peat excavation. Mining and quarrying increased by as much as 77 per cent from twelve months back. In the January to August period, seasonally adjusted industrial output grew by 9.4 per cent from one year ago.

Among the main industries, the biggest growth of good 23 per cent was recorded in August in energy supply. In the metal industry strong growth continues at the rate of good 10 per cent. Manufacture of electrical and electronic products increased by good 12 per cent. In other metal industry output also went up by good 9 per cent. Output in the chemical industry grew by just short of 7 per cent. Output declined most, or by good one per cent, in the pulp and paper industry. Output in other manufacturing remained on level with last year's respective time period.

The rate of growth in Finnish industrial output has been strong throughout the early part of the year. At the onset of autumn, Finnish industrial output also seems to have peaked. Industrial output continues to grow faster in Finland than in the EU countries on the average.

Strong growth in output continued in the metal industry. In 2004, the metal industry accounted for 45 per cent of the total value added of Finnish industry. By contrast, output in the chemical industry appears to have levelled off. The chemical industry accounted for 12 per cent of the value added. In the wood and paper industry output turned to a decline in August. The share of the wood and paper industry of the total value added was 15 per cent.

The share of the electronics industry of the total value added was 21 per cent in 2004. Output in the manufacture of electrical and electronic products turned upwards after mid-2005. In other metal industry, which accounted for 24 per cent of the total value added, output continued to go up steadily in early 2006.
