Sea transport increased in August

The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 7.7 million tonnes in August 2021. Sea transport increased by three per cent from last year's August. Exports increased by two per cent and were 4.0 million tonnes. Import volume increased by three per cent and amounted to 3.7 million tonnes.

General cargo was transported most, in total 1.4 million tonnes, which was 18 per cent of all transport. The second most transported were oil products, 1.0 million tonnes, and ores and concentrates, 0.7 million tonnes.

Container transport

A total of 0.9 million tonnes of containers were transported through Finnish ports i August 2021, which was five per cent less than in August 2020. The number of containers transported was 60,782 (105,930 TEU containers) 1) . Exports of containers went down by nine per cent measured in tonnes and imports went up by two per cent compared to August 2020.

Vehicle transport

A total of 270,772 transport equipment were transported in foreign sea traffic in August 2021. Most transports of transport equipment were cars belonging to passengers. In August, 172,660 cars belonging to passengers were transported. The second most transported were trucks, 58,090 and truck trailers, 35,990.

Passenger traffic

A total of 794,478 persons were transported in passenger traffic in August 2021. In all, 386,761 passengers between Finland and Sweden, 385,234 passengers travelled between Finland and Estonia and 20,005 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with August 2020, the number of passengers decreased by two per cent in August. Compared with August 2019, the number of passengers was, however, just 35 per cent. In August 2021, a total of 2,478 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland, for the first time since October 2019.

Vessel traffic and goods volume in the Saimaa Canal

A total of 151,478 tons of transport were registered through the canal in foreign traffic. Timber was transported most in vessels in foreign traffic, in total 75,965 tonnes. The second most transported were crude minerals and cement.
