Sea transport decreased in September

The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 8.1 million tonnes in September 2021. Sea transport decreased by one per cent from last year's September. Exports increased by three per cent and were 4.4 million tonnes. Import volume decreased by six per cent and amounted to 3.7 million tonnes.

General cargo was transported most, in total 1.5 million tonnes, which was 18 per cent of all transport. The second most transported were oil products, 1.1 million tonnes, and crude oil, 0.9 million tonnes.

Container transport

A total of 0.9 million tonnes of containers were transported through Finnish ports i September 2021, which was 11 per cent less than in September 2020. The number of containers transported was 61,998 (108,367 TEU containers) 1) . Exports of containers went down by 14 per cent measured in tonnes and imports went down by two per cent compared to September 2020.

Vehicle transport

A total of 251,418 transport equipment were transported in foreign sea traffic in September 2021. Most transports of transport equipment were cars belonging to passengers. In September, 144,183 cars belonging to passengers were transported. The second most transported were trucks, 62,436 and truck trailers, 41,019.

Passenger traffic

A total of 671,159 persons were transported in passenger traffic in September 2021. In all, 302,751 passengers between Finland and Sweden, 350,435 passengers travelled between Finland and Estonia and 11,548 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with September 2020, the number of passengers increased by 36 per cent in September. Compared with September 2019, the number of passengers was, however, just 44 per cent. In September 2021, a total of 3,018 passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.

Vessel traffic and goods volume in the Saimaa Canal

A total of 146,909 tons of transport were registered through the canal in foreign traffic. Timber was transported most in vessels in foreign traffic, in total 65,858 tonnes. The second most transported were crude minerals and cement.
