Sea transport decreased in January
The goods volume of foreign sea transport was in total 7.4 million tonnes in January 2022. Sea transport decreased by three per cent from last year's January. Exports decreased by eight per cent and were 3.8 million tonnes. Import volume increased by two per cent and amounted to 3.7 million tonnes.

General cargo was transported most, in total 1.3 million tonnes, which was 18 per cent of all transport. The second most transported were oil products, 1.1 million tonnes, and crude oil, 0.8 million tonnes.
Container transport
A total of 0.8 million tonnes of containers were transported through Finnish ports in January 2022, which was 21 per cent less than in January 2021. The number of containers transported was 56,849 (100,681 TEU containers) 1) . Exports of containers went down by 25 per cent measured in tonnes and imports went down by 11 per cent compared to January 2021.
Vehicle transport
A total of 176,633 transport equipment were transported in foreign sea traffic in January 2022. Most transports of transport equipment were cars belonging to passengers. In January, 81,106 cars belonging to passengers were transported. The second most transported were trucks, 55,282 and truck trailers, 37,428.
Passenger traffic
A total of 349,629 persons were transported in passenger traffic in January 2022. In all, 220,225 passengers travelled between Finland and Estonia, 122,821 passengers between Finland and Sweden and 6,583 passengers between Finland and Germany. Compared with January 2021, the number of passengers increased by 44 per cent. Compared with January 2020, the number of passengers was, however, just 33 per cent. In January 2022, no passengers of foreign cruise ships arrived in Finland.
Vessel traffic and goods volume in the Saimaa Canal
A total of 19,442 tons of transport were registered through the canal in foreign traffic. Timber was transported most in vessels in foreign traffic, in total 8,913 tonnes. The second most transported was wood pulp.
