The environmental goods and services sector employed nearly 80,000 persons in 2012

Production based on environmental pollution prevention or saving natural resources. i.e. the environmental goods and services sector, employed 77,940 persons in 2012, with the metal industry as the biggest employer, 37,700 persons. The second largest employers in the environmental goods and services sector were construction and services that each employed some 10,000 persons. These data derive from Statistics Finland's statistics on the environmental goods and services sector.

The combined turnover of the environmental goods and services sector was a little over EUR 22 billion in 2012, of which manufacturing industries represented two-thirds. Environmental goods and services in manufacturing include such as the production of machinery and equipment that promote material and energy efficiency, utilisation of recycled materials in production, and production of products related to renewable energy. The biggest producer in the environmental goods and services sector was the metal industry with EUR 10.3 billion, which made up 16 per cent of the total turnover in the metal industry. Altogether, 59 per cent of the value of the sold output of the manufacturing industries' environmental goods and services was exported.

In service industries, environmental goods and services generated EUR 1.8 billion in turnover. In service industries, environmental goods and services include, for example, environmental research, planning and consulting services. There were 1,326 enterprises in service industries engaged in the environmental goods and services sector. In the construction industry, the environmental goods and services sector focuses primarily on promoting energy efficiency. The value of the environmental goods and services sector in construction amounted to EUR 1.8 billion.

Principal producers of environmental goods and services are enterprises engaged in water supply and waste management. In 2012, there were 755 enterprises in the main industries engaged in the environmental goods and services sector, and their total turnover amounted to EUR 2.0 billion. Altogether, main industries employed 5,360 persons.

The environmental goods and services sector refers to a business activity related to production, which is based on prevention of environmental pollution or saving of natural resources. In Finland, statistics on the environmental goods and services sector are now released for the fourth time. Due to changes in statistical methods and definitions, the data in this publication are not comparable with the data from previous years.
