Up-to-date information on Finland in pocket size

Statistics Finland's newly published Finland in Figures is a compact, 40-page information package in pocket size about Finland and its people. The booklet contains key data on various economic and social topics as statistics and graphs. It also includes international comparison data.

Finland in Figures 2013 pocket statistics are available in three languages: Finnish, Swedish and English.

Extracts from 2012 data in Finland in Figures:

  • Although the number of immigrants in Finland has grown in recent years, 95 per cent of the population spoke the official languages of the country, Finnish or Swedish, at the end of 2012. The share of the Finnish-speaking population was 90 per cent.
  • Nearly 200,000 citizens of foreign countries were living in Finland. The biggest share of them, one-fifth, were Estonians, and the number of Estonian citizens also grew clearly most over the year, by one-sixth.
  • The share of renewable energy sources in total energy consumption rose to 30 per cent.
  • Finland's main trade partners were Russia, Germany and Sweden. Most were imported from Russia, and most were exported to Sweden.
  • The number of both fatalities and injuries in road traffic accidents went down by over ten per cent from the previous year. The number of passenger cars exceeded three million and that of lorries and vans half a million.
  • Of employed people, 73 per cent were employed by private employers, 21 per cent by local government and only six per cent by central government. The total number of employed persons rose to 2,483,000.
  • The number of recipients of disability pension has gone down to a quarter of a million. The total number of pensioners was 1.5 million. Four out of five pensioners received old-age pension.
  • Nearly all types of offences went down from the year before. However, frauds and embezzlements increased clearly.
  • The life expectancy in Finland is as long as in Denmark, 79 years. In other Western European countries it is, however, one or two years longer.
