June 2015 Number of libraries has halved in 35
years
There were 790 public libraries in Finland in 2014, while in 1980
there were still more than 1,600. Even though the number of
libraries has decreased, library collections have grown. Last year,
libraries contained good 33 million books.

Finland
Statistics Finland's newly published Finland in Figures is a
compact information package in pocket size about Finland and its
people. The booklet also contains international comparison
data.

May 2015 Table package on mass media statistics free of
charge on the web
Forty-four per cent of Finnish households watch TV on computers, 13
per cent on smart phones and 17 per cent on tablets. Finns have a
total of 3.9 million television sets. These are just some of the
data that can be found in Statistics Finland's recently published
free mass media table package.

2015 Have a look at our renewed StatFin
database
Statistics Finland's free StatFin database has been renewed. The
PX-Web software functioning as the platform for the database has
been updated to an entirely new version. This enables utilisation
of tables through API or the interface.

building and dwelling production continues – estimated data
will be published on 19 May 2015
The production interruption of the statistics on building and
dwelling production that began in January continues for the time
being. Statistics Finland will, however, publish estimated data on
building and dwelling production on 19 May 2015.

April 2015 Seventy per cent of MPs have tertiary level
qualifications
Nearly 70 per cent of the
elected MPs have tertiary level qualifications. Just 3.5 per cent
of the MPs have only basic level education.
21 April 2015 Results of the Parliamentary elections as
maps and figures
Statistics Finland's free election map service provides data
illustrated by maps and charts on the Parliamentary elections. The
service can be used to view such as voting turnout and support for
the parties, as well as the share of votes for the elected
candidates on various regional levels.

April 2015 Candidates in the Parliamentary elections more
highly educated than before
Nearly one-half of the candidates in the Parliamentary elections
have tertiary level qualifications, while only around 20 per cent
of persons entitled to vote do. The background analysis of
candidates in the Parliamentary elections also examines the
candidates' age, employment, family status and income level.

March 2015 Statistics Finland will terminate 19
employment relationships based on its co-operation
negotiations
After the co-operation negotiations that ended in February,
Statistics Finland announced that it was preparing to give notice
to at most 21 employees on financial and production grounds. Now,
the number of persons to be dismissed has been confirmed to be
seven, and the employment of 12 persons will end as a result of
other arrangements.

March 2015 Publication interruption of the statistics on
building and dwelling production continues
The publication interruption of the statistics on building and
dwelling production that began in January continues for the time
being. Statistics Finland has been unable to restart the
publication of data yet because the Population Register Centre has
not been able to deliver sufficiently extensive building register
data to Statistics Finland used as the data source of the
statistics.

March 2015 Number of veteran vehicles has nearly doubled
in ten years
According to the cultural
heritage statistics compiled by Statistics Finland, there were as
many as over 41,000 vehicles registered as veteran vehicles in
Finland at the end of 2014 while ten years earlier they amounted to
good 20,000.

2015 Forty per cent of Members of Parliament are women
in the Nordic countries
According to the Nordic Gender Equality in Figures publication,
around 40 per cent of Members of Parliament are women in the Nordic
countries, while the average for the EU countries is 23 per cent.
In Sweden, the share of female Members of Parliament is the
highest, 45 per cent. In Finland, 42.5 per cent of the Members of
Parliament are women.

March 2015 European auditors give Statistics Finland's
statistics a good grade
European experts' Peer Review Report found the statistics
production of Statistics Finland, which will have its 150th
anniversary this year, to be of high quality and reliable. The
impartiality of statistics producers and people's trust in
statistics are regarded as particular strengths for Finland.

February 2015 Press conference on economic development
in 2014
Statistics Finland will release preliminary national accounts data
on economic development in 2014 at a press conference on 3 March
2015 at 9 am.

February 2015 Statistics Finland's co-operation
negotiations have ended
Statistics Finland's co-operation negotiations have ended. As a
result of these negotiations, Statistics Finland considers at most
the dismissal of 21 employees. At the start of the negotiations,
the need for redundancies was estimated to be 45 persons.

February 2015 Production of the statistics on building
and dwelling production suspended
Statistics Finland will suspend the production of data for the
statistics on building and dwelling production for the time being.
The data is unable to be produced and released because the
Population Register Centre cannot deliver the building register
data used as the data source of the statistics. The statistics will
be produced again when the quality of the released data can be
ensured.

January 2015 Statistics Finland's website has been
renewed
The layout of Statistics Finland's website and the structure of the
home page have been renewed. The objective of the renewal is to
make it easier to find key data on our pages. The renewed pages are
also better suited for use with different devices.

January 2015 Court statistics discontinued
Statistics Finland discontinues the production and publication of
statistics on court decisions in 2015. The reason for the
discontinuation is that required funding has not been acquired to
produce the statistics.

January 2015 Our home page will be renewed
Statistics Finland's home page will be renewed both in terms of
layout and structure at the turn of January and February. The new
home page will present our old services in a new fashion and there
will also be entirely new service sections.

January 2015 Data by postal code area opened
Statistics Finland offers data by postal code area free of charge
for everybody's use. The Paavo - Open data by postal code area
service contains map data and versatile statistical data.
