Information package on transport published

The compilation of transport statistics, Transport and Communications Statistical Yearbook for Finland 2013 has been published. The volume published by Statistics Finland contains tables and figures on road, railway, water and air transport and communications, combined tables on all forms of transport, and international comparisons. In addition to the newest annual data, the Yearbook includes long time series and regional information.

Besides Statistics Finland, the data derive from VR-Group Ltd, the Finnish Transport Agency, the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi), Finavia, and the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority. The Transport and Communications Statistical Yearbook for Finland is in two languages, Finnish and English.

In 2012, 82 per cent of the 79,735 million passenger kilometres in domestic transport were driven with passenger cars, almost ten per cent with buses or coaches, five per cent with trains, and good three per cent with other vehicles.
At the end of 2012, the Finnish vehicle register contained 3,057,484 passenger cars, 244,968 motorcycles and 298,051 mopeds. The number of passenger cars increased by three, that of motorcycles by four and that of mopeds by five per cent from the year before.
In 2012, 111,664 new passenger cars were registered, which is 12 per cent fewer than in 2011. Of new passenger cars, 60 per cent were petrol-driven and 39 per cent diesel-driven and good one per cent were equipped with other motive power (e.g. petrol/ethanol-driven).
In 2012, a total of nearly 70 million trips were made by train in passenger transport, which is good one per cent more than in the year before. Of these trips, 80 per cent were made in local transport in the Helsinki region.
In 2012, close on 18 million passengers were transported in international sea transport, which is 1.4 per cent more than one year before. Altogether, 7.6 million passengers were transported to Estonia and 9.1 million to Sweden.
A total of 368,213 passengers visited Finland on a foreign cruise ship, which was 4,471 more than in the year before.
During 2012, international shipments totalled 93 million tonnes. Exports increased by 0.5 per cent from the year before but imports decreased by ten per cent.
In 2012, nearly one million passengers departed from Finland on charter flights and six million on scheduled flights. The number of passengers on scheduled flights increased by 2.5 percent but on charter flights it decreased by nine per cent compared with the previous year. Charter flights were most often headed for the Canary Islands in Spain and scheduled flights for Germany.
The number of passengers passing through Oulu airport reached over one million for the first time. The number of passengers at Oulu airport increased by 11 per cent from the previous year.
There were over nine million mobile telephone subscriptions in Finland in 2012. An average of 1.6 text messages were sent from these subscriptions every day of the year, which amounts to 5.5 billion text messages during the year.
In 2012, there were more telephone subscriptions in the world than there were people, i.e. 1,071 subscriptions per one thousand persons. Of these, 84 per cent were mobile telephone subscriptions and 16 per cent were fixed telephone subscriptions.
